Following the events of Batman Begins, Batman (Christian Bale) finds success with Lt. Gordon (Gary Oldman) and rising star District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) in taking down Gotham's mob, but their efforts are upended by the arrival of the Joker (Heath Ledger).
The Joker, a chaotic anarchist, disrupts the mob's plans and offers to kill Batman for them, escalating his war by targeting Gotham's heroes and civilians, forcing Batman to confront impossible moral choices.
